This book contains two books from the Stanton-Downes series. The books can be read as standalones even though they are books 5 and 6 in the series.THE FAMOUS HEROINE: Cora Downes is the daughter of a wealthy merchant. Exuberant and without polish, Cora is too physical for refined society. Because she rescued the grandson of a duchess, Cora has been brought to London to find a husband. Francis Kneller is nursing a broken heart. For years he courted Lady Samantha who ended up marrying someone else (book number 4). When Cora meets Francis, she is comfortable in his presence because his foppish appearance relaxes her. She knows that he cannot be interested in her. When the two are accidentally caught in a compromising situation, marriage is the only solution. Cora, however, is surprised to find out that Francis is not the effeminate peacock she thought him to be. This book is incredibly funny as Cora keeps getting into scrapes as she performs "rescues" that might actually be causing more problems than they solve. I love how Balogh creates these slow, intense emotional dramas that are all about the heart of the characters rather than a superficial plot. The deliberate pacing of this book allows these characters to build a relationship between them so that once the marriage is required, they are ready to actually have emotional intimacy. The humor of this book is pitch perfect. Cora is sometimes silly in her assumptions, but this book never makes fun of her instead showing readers her good nature and caring for others that leads her into misadventures. Rating: 4 stars.
THE PLUMED BONNET: Alistair Munro, Duke of Bridgwater is a former romantic who has made himself cynical to protect himself. He is now at an age where he realizes he might need to marry. While traveling, he comes upon a woman in a gaudy hat and cloak walking along the road. Because she pierces his ennui, he agrees to take her in his carriage while she tells him a tale of being a governess turned heiress who was robbed. He doesn't believe her but is amused enough by her story to agree to take her to her destination. He figures that once they arrive, he will make her his mistress. What he doesn't know is that everything that Stephanie Gray is telling him is true. I loved this book. Balogh can write such complex emotional stories. Alistair is playing with Stephanie but she believes him a hero. Her desire to be worthy of his good deeds toward her make her miserable. I loved how these two slowly have to work through their new relationship. These are two decent people who have to learn to deal with one another and build a relationship. Complex and with deep emotional overtones, this is my favorite of the series. Rating: 4.5 stars.

The Famous Heroine/The Plumed Bonnet Dark Angel Mary Balogh 9780440245438 Books Reviews
As I got into THE PLUMED BONNET, I wondered if it would be a rerun of THE FAMOUS HEROINE. Two middle-class heroines, both intimidated by the aristocracy. I learned there was little similarity between the two.
THE FAMOUS HEROINE was almost farcical...quite funny in spots. An agreeable story though I grew a little tired of Cora's continued angst every time she met a "title." Heavenly days, she was associating with "titles" on a daily basis. I grew seriously tired of Francis' ongoing broken heart. Nonetheless, it was an amusing story.
THE PLUMED BONNET was a horse of another color. A very good story with remarkable depth considering its length. Both characters were well developed. We learned of Stephanie throughout the story; we mostly came to know Alistair during the latter part of the tale. I thought that was quite an interesting way of developing his character...and it was done very well.
Both stories were a pleasure but the second was far more impressive. The first lighter, the second with more meat on its bones. Both written with a light hand.
Enjoy your reading! )
These are two of the author's earlier books, originally published individually as Signet Regency romances, and are related in style (humorous) and by the fact that a secondary character of The Famous Heroine is the primary hero of The Plumed Bonnet. In The Famous Heroine, we meet Cora, a wealthy merchant's daughter. She has an ample build and an impulsive nature. Her impulsivity leads to many improbable situations and eventually a compromising one shared by Lord Francis. Francis has no wish to marry and is, in fact, nursing a broken heart, but he does the honorable thing. Can this fashionable man of the ton and this young woman find happiness together? Unlike most of Balogh's books, there is no true heartache; I often cry when reading her stories, but The Famous Heroine is fairly light-hearted from start to finish. In The Plumed Bonnet, the hero is a duke and the heroine appears to be a lady of the shadiest nature. The duke is gloomily wondering how much longer he can avoid marriage, since his position makes it essential to produce heirs. The lady is down to her last coin, thanks to robbers on the road. She is so thankful to be rescued by him and given shelter and a ride to her destination, that she doesn't realize how he perceives her. He is so entertained by her obviously false tale of unexpected inheritance that he goes along with the play, right up until the doorstep of her mansion...when he finds himself betrothed as a matter of honor. Throw in the usual number of relatives and friends, Regency entertainments, and misunderstandings, and you have an amusing tale. This is not as funny as The Famous Heroine, but not tragic or sad. There is simply the growth of a relationship amid the expected obstacles of two strangers in wedlock. Neither book is among Balogh's best, but are enjoyable as afternoon reads. 4 stars for The Famous Heroine and 3 stars for The Plumed Bonnet
