The title of this book aroused my curiosity; how could anyone possibly arrest God? I decided to satisfy my curiosity, it being unlikely that the author of Buddha's Orphans would have written a really bad book. I wasn't disappointed; he didn't. As to the title, I don't want to spoil your surprise when you read the fifth story, "During the Festival."

The nine stories in this book are each very different from the others, but they share a certain atmosphere, which, I trust, reflects the cultural milieu of Nepal and Kathmandu. But I have been more impressed with the similarities than with the differences between Nepalese (as Dr. Upadhyay describes them) and Americans.

I am not really sure which this book should have, four or five stars. Neither choice would be far wrong; none of these stories is up to the level of Arthur C. Clarke's magnificent "The Star" or the stories in Edgar Pangborn's Still I Persist in Wondering (Tales of a Darkening World), but I enjoyed every one, so if I err I prefer to err on the side of kindness.

Arresting God in Kathmandu Samrat Upadhyay 9780618043712 Books Reviews

Caviat I only read four of the stories before I was fed-up with this book.

3 of the four stories felt like plot descriptions for low-budget soft-core porn. Man is sad or frustrated with life; man finds unconventional woman to have sex with (anyone, really, ugly secretary, disabled daughter-in-law, random lady on the street who he talked to for ten seconds); sex is awkward and painful to read; sex doesnt make man's life better, but at least he's having sex; the end.

The other story was interesting, but ultimately not nearly enough to keep me reading.
really enjoyed this slim volume of short stories and can't wait to read his first novel. A gifted writer in the tradition of Rohinton Mistry and all the other wonderful and talented Indian writers --and now I have been somewhat exposed to Nepal's culture as well...I highly recommend this book
Great insight to Nepalese culture and traditions. Fantastic character development. The stories only get better.
The first three stories (chapters) were very engaging and quite enjoyable. By the sixth and seventh story - though each was different - it felt too familiar. Not necessarily predictable, but too much the same as before. The final story switching to first-person was strange and jarring at first, but by the end of the book seemed to "work". The book is definitely entertaining and makes Kathmandu and other areas of Nepal "come alive" even for those of us who have never been there.
I bought this for my friend who is from Nepal as a way for him to practice English reading stories he could relate to and he enjoyed the book VERY much!
Short stories, current day, set in Nepal. What I liked is the description of places and people - gives you a feel for what it is like in Nepal. What I didn't like is that the stories were mostly sad; stories of disappointment; love lost; etc. However, does give you a sense for cultural differences.
I have been looking to read this book for long time and I finally did it. The stories are not bad, I enjoyed pretty much. I have read most of the books by Samrat Upadhyay and there are well constructed and narrated. I will definitely read his new creation whenever it will be in the market. In addition to that, this book was arrived on time and as it was used book, it was in acceptable condition.
