Somehow I missed this book until recently. Thinking it was another beachy novel, boy, was I surprised. As I read, I felt it had been wrote by me. There were some differences but the fact of Mother/Daughter relationship was exactly as it reads. When words are not spoken, the worse is suspected. If you don't make the effort to enable that relationship, you end up with 2 versions of the same life. For someone who views it as unrealistic, has never went through an estrangement with a family member, and I can tell you, from experience, it hurts like hell. This writer knows about this type of relationship as she hit so many emotions exactly right. You think you're doing it "your way" but you're lonely and won't admit it even to yourself. You don't say the words, so nothing changes. This is a MUST READ book for anyone who has ever gone through estrangement.

Summer Island A Novel Kristin Hannah 9780345483447 Books Reviews

Have we not hung on to hate for hate's sake? That burnishing, branding, all consuming emotion that can be banished by the smallest attrition. It is fueled by insecurity, exhaustion, chaos, work, parenting, loss; in short, life. Sorry can be meaningless. Forgiveness can be bittersweet, harsh and even reverent. But to remain forgiving takes work. Kristin Hannah's books leave me with a Life lesson. Each book has a take away. Get swept away in this book of life, rediscovered on a small island. Coming full circle dealing with family, loss, indulgence, regret and finally forgiveness, this book is a chapter in everyone's daily grind.
This is a story about the estranged relationship between a mother and daughter. Nora Bridge is a well-known and respected advice columnist and radio talk show host who is always espousing the importance of family. In reality, Nora and her own daughter haven't spoken in years. Ruby Bridge is a struggling standup comic who's stand-up routine consists of telling stinging jokes about the mother who abandoned her.

Things change when Nora's fans turn against her after a secret in her past is made public by a would-be blackmailer. When Nora is hurt in a car accident, she flees to the family summer cottage to recover from her injuries and get away from the tabloid press. When Ruby surprisingly volunteers to come to the summer cottage to take care of her mother while she recovers, Nora is hopeful this will lead to a reconciliation with her daughter. What Nora doesn't know is that Ruby has accepted $50,000 to write a "tell all" magazine article about her mother.

This sounds like the makings of a good story (and I haven't even mentioned the rekindling of a childhood romance storyline, or the childhood friend who is now dying storyline). The book isn't bad, but it did fall a bit flat for me. It probably didn't help that Ruby isn't the most sympathetic character.

"Summer Island" was not nearly as compelling a story as Kristin Hannah's "The Nightingale", an historical fiction about two sisters during the Second World War. Nor was it as enjoyable a read as "Firefly Lane", about two best friends during the Seventies, Eighties and Nineties. I think this book deserves 3.5 stars, but I'm rounding up because of the goodwill left over from prior books I've read by this author. And because I look forward to reading another Kristin Hannah book soon.
I enjoyed listening to this story, which is told from the alternating points of view of successful radio host Nora, a woman who preaches to the nation about the importance of family, among other things, and (ironically enough) her estranged daughter, the angry aspiring comedian, Ruby.
When pornographic pictures from Nora’s past emerge, proving that she had an affair while married, her image of being a family values icon are shattered, and her career is in tatters.

Ruby’s career has never gotten started, but the downfall of her mother leads to opportunities for her. Ruby has been angry with her mother since she abandoned Ruby and her sister Caroline when they were young.

Nora wants to hide out from the media and the world on their house on Summer Island, but a car accident means that she needs help. Ruby comes to help her mother—and gather material for the tell-all article she’s been given big bucks to write.

While the ending is not some big twist, there is romance and nostalgia that make this an enjoyable read. More important, this book is about the complex bonds of family, specifically mother/daughter relationships.
Image to say that this is another great story about family distinction.
Nora Bridge walked out her family eleven years ago. She has a great career in radio and when a scandal shakes her world she is devastated. After a car wreck she decides to go back to her roots on Summer Island but she has to have some one take care of her for awhile.
Her daughter has kept in touch with her daughter Caroline some. So Caroline contacts her little sister Ruby. Ruby hasn't seen in anyone in her family forever but she is this one who takes care of her Mother, who she hates.
This is a very poignant story poignant story mother and daughters finding their way back to each other. I can so relate to this story and cried through it. Please give yourself a treat and read this fantastic tale by s remarkably author.
